Wyclef Jean’s hopes to run from the President of Haiti seemingly came to an end
on August 20 after the country’s election officials ruled
him ineligible to run for the top political spot. Wyclef initially responded to the ruling on Saturday and said that though he
didn’t agree with the committee’s decision he would respect it and move on in his efforts to help the earthquake-ravaged land through his charity. But it appears that he has had a change of heart. Jean released a written statement over the weekend saying “after careful consideration and much soul-searching” he will contest the officials’ ruling.
“I will be seeking a solution through legal channels,” revealed Jean. “And I urge my countrymen to be patient through this process.”
“In the 36 hours since the board’s decision, I have been in constant
conversation with my family, friends and advisors, and reading the comments of good people and supporters throughout the Haitian diaspora. I’ve also been closely monitoring the situation on the ground, which I am happy to report has remained peaceful and thoughtful…These factors, and more, inspire me now.”
The rapper/producer said that the spotlight that the world has put on his native country has pushed him to continue in his mission to become the next President. “I cannot in good conscience give up my quest to lead Haiti to the greatness I know in my heart we are capable of reaching,” he said in further explanation of his decision. “I cannot surrender now, simply because an obstacle has been set
before me; now is the time I must stand up and show Haiti -- and the world -- that my vision of a nation renewed and redeveloped is a vision for which I am willing to fight.” 34 applied to become a candidate in the race for presidency; 19 were accepted and
15 were rejected.
